Ink of My Tomorrow

"People are subject to change." The first time I encountered this statement was when I had all the time in the world—tucked under my blanket, the AC on full blast, watching Classroom of the Elite. Ever since that moment, those words have been stuck in my mind. Change is inevitable, shaping who we are and who we will become. Like the shifting seasons or the tide meeting the shore, we are constantly evolving, whether we realize it or not. At times, change can be daunting, a force that pulls us away from the comfort of the present. But looking at both sides of the story, I’ve come to realize that change can also be beautiful—a gateway to growth, new experiences, and a future filled with endless possibilities.

But have you ever wondered what your life would look like 15 years from now you ask?

Whenever the thought in my mind drifts to my future, I envision myself as a successful nurse, dedicating my life to caring for others and making a difference in the medical field. With years of hard work and perseverance, I will have built a stable career, one that not only fulfills my passion but also provides financial security. I imagine myself coming home to my own safe space, a cozy place that reflects my personality, where I can truly relax and unwind. A time will come when I will no longer feel guilty about doing the things I love, whether it’s indulging in my favorite books, watching movies, or simply enjoying the quiet moments of life, because I know I have worked hard for them. Money will no longer be a source of worry; instead, I will have the freedom to pursue my passions without hesitation.

More than personal success, I envision a future where my family remains as close as we are now. As we grow older and build our own lives, I see us still finding time to meet, sharing stories and laughter like we always have. No matter how far life takes us, I imagine our bond remaining strong, unshaken by distance or time. I see us fulfilling the dreams we once talked about, standing side by side, celebrating not just our individual achievements but the unbreakable connection that has carried us through the years.

I picture a day when I can finally give my parents everything they have ever wished for. I see myself walking them through a home filled with comfort, one they no longer have to worry about. I imagine them waking up without the weight of responsibilities pressing down on them, finally able to enjoy the life they have worked so hard to build for me and my siblings, because after all, its their first time living life too. I hope to see their smiles out of true happiness, knowing that all the years of effort and love they poured into me and my siblings have come full circle.

As for my brothers, I hope that no matter how much time passes, we will still be there for each other. I imagine us reminiscing about childhood, laughing at the moments that once felt so small but now mean everything. And when life gets tough, I hope they will still be there to lend me their torches, just like when I was in Grade 1, borrowing their medals to feel like a winner. I envision us achieving the dreams we once spoke about as kids, still cheering each other on, still standing together, no matter how much the world changes around us.

The same goes for my friends. Even if life takes us in different directions after school, I hope that we will still be there for one another, maintaining the connection we built through the years. They have always been a part of my journey, from the days I worried about not having friends in junior high to now, where I am surrounded by people who truly made me joyful. They have made my school life bearable, filling my days with laughter, support, and memories I will cherish forever. No matter how much time passes, I hope that we can always find our way back to each other, continuing to share moments of joy and companionship as we grow.

As I look toward the future, I envision my self as someone who has learned how to become truly independent, not relying on someone else for every small inconvenience. I want to be brave, to face life with the understanding that mistakes are a natural part of growth rather than something to fear. Most importantly, I hope that I have learned to take better care of myself so that I can continue moving forward with strength, resilience, and self-love.

Now, all of those are what I hope happens in this lifetime. If God permits, I hope to fulfill them soon.

"I don't know what the future may hold, but I know who holds the future"-Ralph Abernathy

Rewriting Yesterday’s Rhythm

Every March, our school comes alive with energy as we commemorate High School Day, a time when Junior High and Senior High School students compete in a spirited dance competition. This year, the 123rd celebration was no different. The entire month leading up to the event was filled with intense preparations, from choreographing routines to making props, all while juggling our regular classes. With practices eating up class hours, balancing academics and rehearsals was a challenge, but in the end, performing with our grade level made everything worth it.

The day began with a grand parade, where each determined sections aimed to win the "Most Disciplined Section Award." We marched with enthusiasm, keeping discipline in mind, but unfortunately, we didn’t win. Then came the highlight of the event—the dance competition. We gave it our all, moving in sync with the music, hoping to gain victory. But despite our best efforts, we did not place as we had hoped for. Still, the experience of performing together, feeling the crowd's energy, and seeing months of hard work pay off was rewarding in itself.

After the competition, we roamed around the school, exploring the various booths set up by different clubs. Each booth had something unique to offer, adding to the vibrant atmosphere of the celebration. However, amidst all the excitement, I couldn’t help but notice the aftermath—scattered trash left behind as students moved from one activity to another. It was a reminder that while celebrations bring joy, they also come with responsibilities that we sometimes overlook.

Before heading home, I caught glimpses of the "Battle of the Bands," but I wasn’t able to stay long enough to see who won. Still, even with the exhaustion from all the activities, the day left a lasting impression.

The yearly celebration of High School Day holds great significance for ISNHS. It is more than just a celebration, it is a tribute to the school’s legacy, a reminder of how far it has come, and a celebration of the students and teachers who keep its spirit alive. It fosters camaraderie, unity, and school pride, allowing us to create memories that we will carry beyond our years in school. Through events like this, we are reminded that ISNHS is not just an institution—it is a community that continues to grow, learn, and celebrate together.

Her Voice Matters

"Women, they have minds, and they have souls, as well as just hearts. And they've got ambition, and they've got talent, as well as just beauty. I'm so sick of people saying that love is just all a woman is fit for. I'm so sick of it." These powerful words from Jo March in Little Women perfectly encapsulate the beauty of womanhood and the flaws in society's treatment towards women. Every March, we commemorate the significance of women in our society and address the persistent misconception that women should conform to socially constructed standards.

Aligned with this year's theme, "WE for Gender Equality and an Inclusive Society," this celebration serves as a stark reminder that women are more than the roles society has traditionally assigned to them. Women can be any version of themselves they aspire to be, whether as thinkers, leaders, or visionaries, and they deserve to be seen beyond the expectations placed upon them. True gender equality means breaking the chains that bind women's potential and creating an environment where everyone, regardless of gender, has the opportunity to thrive.

An inclusive society does not confine individuals to outdated norms but instead values them for their abilities, aspirations, and contributions. This Women's Month, we must aspire to go beyond mere recognition and actively work towards a future where every voice is heard, every right is protected, and every dream is supported. By working together, we can create a world where people are defined not by gender, but by their limitless potential.

Heritage in Motion

The Kannawidan Festival is an annual celebration in the province of Ilocos Sur that honors the founding of the place, held from the last week of the month of January to the  first week of Febuary. Its name is derived from the Ilocano term "tawid," with its meaning, heritage, that symbolizes the community's dedication to preserving cultural and traditional practices. The festival not only celebrates the historical founding of the province, but it also serves as a way of giving thanks to the Almighty for the region's bountiful blessings and close-knit relationships among Ilocano people.

One of the most significant traditions of the festival is the opening mass at the St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral, along with the procession featuring the Patron Saints of the 40 parishes and images of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. This religious practice showcases the deep-rooted faith that Ilocano people have, with local officials and DepEd representatives often participating in the mass and procession. It continuously serves as a reminder of the spiritual foundation that guides the community through generations.

The Kannawidan Festival's main focus is to make the younger people engage themselves, encouraging them to appreciate and preserve Ilocano culture and traditions. With the continuous progression of modernization, it is crucial for the to be connected deeply with their cultural roots.  Activities during the festival include traditional rituals, tribal dances, choir competitions, and folk performances, all designed to promote the appreciation of indigenous songs and dances that have long been part of the province’s cultural fabric.

Beyond having the purpose of preserving cultures and traditions, the festival also provides a platform for showcasing local products, craftsmanship, and agricultural feats through events like the Partuat ken Patanor, an agricultural fair.  The Kannawidan Festival not only strengthens the community’s bond but also promotes tourism, making it an important event for both locals and visitors alike. It is a beautiful reminder of the province's rich past and its commitment to ensuring that its heritage lives on for future generations.

What are the Chances?

“Love is like a roller coaster, full of twists and turns.” —Unknown

Love comes in any form, whether it be a mother’s love, a father’s love, a sibling’s love, or many more. It is something unpredictable. Many misinterpret love as the feeling of always being happy, forgetting the reality that love, like a roller coaster, has its ups and downs. Valentine's Day serves as a reminder that love is not just about joy and romance but also about understanding, patience, and growth. It is a day to celebrate the different kinds of love that shape our lives—whether from family, friends, or even ourselves. More than grand gestures, the essence of this day lies in appreciating those who stand by us through life's twists and turns.

We commemorate Valentine's Day to honor love in all of its forms, not simply for romantic purposes. It is an opportunity to thank those who have been there for us and to think back on those who have helped us. The romantic side of this day is frequently emphasized by society, but true love is deeper and more expansive than that. A teacher's silent support, a friend's assistance during difficult times, or the love of a mother who stays up late for her child—all of these deserve acknowledgment. Valentine's Day offers us the opportunity to remember that love is about more than just providing gifts; it's also about making other people feel important and loved.

Expressing affection does not always require expensive presents or extravagant surprises. I personally show my affection to the people I treasure by simply being there for them, making sure they know that I am always available for them, that they don't have to put up their defenses as long as they are with me, and they are always able to show who they are.

Love’s beauty lies in the sincerity of our actions. After all, just like a roller coaster, love is about embracing both the highs and lows with the people who matter most.

The Journey of Turning Ideas into Reality

Embarking on our Community-Based Research was an adventure I didn’t expect would be so rewarding. From brainstorming ideas to working closely together as a team, every step was a unique experience. What made it even more special was doing it with a group of people who made the journey fun and full of learning. Below are some of the moments that really stuck with me and helped shape this project into something memorable.

Here's an excerpt from one of our brainstorming meetings where we were all gathered to collide ideas and to discuss what would be the most suitable topic for us to delve deeper into.

Here’s a peaceful shot of the river, with fish pens floating along its calm waters. It was interesting to see how the local community utilizes the river for fish farming, and it gave us a deeper understanding of the region's resources. The view was both serene and eye-opening, reflecting the connection between nature and livelihood in the area.

Here is another picture of the river, this time showcasing its wide expanse. The flowing water and lush surroundings created such a tranquil scene, reminding us how critical this river is to the community. It is not only a means of earning a living, but also an integral part of their daily life. We commend the river for its grace and vitality.

This is during a collaborative discussion on how we decided to divide the work on the web layout. We were selecting the best design for each section, deciding who would tackle which part of the project. Everyone contributed their unique skills, so it was bound to come together. The level of creativity and ideas that filled the discussions was amazing, most importantly, it was inspiring to see the team take ownership of their respective roles.

The code I was working on for my portion of the web design is shown here. At first, it was a little challenging, but when I finally put everything together from the layout to the content, I felt satisfied. Being aware that everything was coming together for our project made me feel accomplished when I saw all the lines of code begin to make sense and take shape.

This photo was taken some time after we were done with our web design presentation. Knowing that all of our hard work had paid off made us smile and felt as though a huge weight had been lifted off our shoulders. Seeing our concepts come to life on screen was wonderful, and the entire team was pleased with our collective achievement.

An experience that flew by, but I’ll cherish it! :)

3 Quarters Down, 1 More To Be Done

For this quarter, I gained many valuable skills and discoveries, especially in terms of creating and presenting a community-based research (CBR) project. I learned how to structure the parts of a CBR, including the title, subtitle, focus study, and conclusion. After submitting the hard copy of our CBR, we transitioned to creating a webpage for the project. As I worked on my sections of the webpage, I discovered how to use cascading style sheets (CSS) tags to enhance the design of the page. This was something new to me, and I appreciated learning how CSS could be used to style the webpage. I also learned about the different types of lists, including unlisted and listed lists, as well as nested unordered and ordered lists, which allowed me to organize information more effectively on the webpage. We also worked on creating blog posts, just like in the previous quarters, which helped me practice presenting ideas and reflecting on my learning. These activities helped me develop a deeper understanding of web design and how to present information in an organized, visually appealing way.

However, I encountered some challenges along the way, particularly with coding. Some of the HTML tags and concepts were unfamiliar to me, and I struggled to understand how they worked. This was especially true when I had to figure out how to use CSS tags in my coding.

To address these challenges, I dedicated time to learning and researching the coding issues I faced. I used resources like online tutorials and practice exercises to better understand the coding concepts. Over time, I became more confident and capable in handling coding challenges, which helped me continue working on my project.

Moving forward, I will continue improving my skills in coding and web design. I now know that learning takes time, and overcoming challenges requires persistence and curiosity. I’ll continue to apply these lessons to future projects and further develop my skills.

Where Do We Go From Here?

As I write this blog for the last quarter of this school year, I’ve come to realize that this is it—the final stretch before a new chapter...
